Caroline Mercury
DCA Past President, Georgia Pacific (Retired)
I became involved in the city-sponsored Downtown Vision Coalition as the GP representative prior to our group becoming a 501(c)3 Main Street program in 2009. I am proud to be a founding board member and have served as president for 12 years. I currently chair the Design Committee and the Camas Mill Citizen Advisory Group.
I began working for Crown Zellerbach back in the day and eventually retired (through many name changes!) from GP Camas after 37 years. Having degrees in Paper Science Engineering, most of my professional career was spent on process and product improvement, technical service, and compliance. I am gratified by the transformation we have been part of creating in Camas. Our focus on community engagement, historic preservation, and economic vitality is blossoming!
How long have you served on the board?
14 years.
What do you love about Camas?
I love the cozy, welcoming feel of the historic downtown setting. It comes across in conversations with merchants and just walking down the street! I love the deep level of community that everyone can access in ways that fit their lives.
What do you enjoy about being a part of the Camas Community?
I enjoy being a part of the vitality and connections within the downtown district that the DCA has nurtured since 2009.
What is your favorite memory in Camas?
We work very hard to bring history to life and help newcomers feel connected to that history as well. While acting as a docent at the mill interpretive center, a 7-year-old girl (a First Friday regular with her mom) said of the mill, ” I want to live here!” Mission accomplished!
